reading, and other randomness…

I was over at Meg McElwee’s blog this past week and noticed that she’d changed up her book list in the side bar a bit. Specifically, she divided it into three lists: one for the books she’s reading to her two-year-old, one for the baby and one for the books she’s reading herself. It got me thinking…

I love to read. It’s one of the ways I quiet my mind, so I try to read each night before I go to bed. So, why haven’t I also listed the books I’m reading? Certainly, I haven’t wanted anyone to go “Hmn. She’s reading that book.” (followed by a nod of approval), or likewise the same being said and followed by a look of shock and disgust. However, I do think that it might provide some interesting fodder for dialog around here.

Therefore, I’ve decided I’m going to change things around a bit in the sidebar…later. (Did you notice I was gone for three days? Yeah, sorry about that. It looks like things will be quieting down around here toward the end of the week. I hope! If you don’t hear from me, don’t fret. I’m just buried alive in laundry.) :)

Got any recommendations of what I should read next?

on my table

I’ve mentioned how much I love Family Feasts for $75 a Week, right? (How about here, here and here for starters?) It’s definitely my favorite cookbook. (After buying my copy, Betty Crocker was excommunicated from my kitchen!) :)

Mary Ostyn‘s writing is less like a cooking manual and more like a casual conversation with a good friend — a very experienced and smart friend! The first four chapters offer a detailed (but easily understandable) plan to take charge of your food budget: shopping tactics, efficient cooking, and best practices for food preparation and storage. By incorporating these methods in your meal planning, you can save money at every turn!

Following those chapters are 200 recipes — and the learning doesn’t stop there. Many recipes include brief cooking “lessons”, explaining the benefits of creating meals from scratch and how to save even more buy substituting lower-cost ingredients in your favorite dishes.

Take a peek at some of the most well-worn well-loved pages in my copy:

My copy was personally autographed…by my two-year-old. :)

We make pancakes or waffles from this recipe every weekend!

This pie crust is so easy (no rolling!) and gets rave reviews at my house.

This Ranch Dressing is amazing! I have to make large batches to keep up with the demand.

Cover-to-cover, this cookbook is packed with delicious recipes and great information.

Want to get hold of a copy for yourself? Amazon has them for less than $12. If you ask my family, it’s worth every penny I paid for it!

Swinging 1

Swinging 2
How do you like to go up in a swing,
up in the air so blue?
Oh, I do think it the pleasantest thing
ever a child can do

Up in the air and over the wall
till I can see so wide
Rivers and trees and cattle and all
over the countryside

Till I look down on the garden green,
down on the roof so brown
Up in the air I go flying again,
up in the air and down!
